Writing for the Online Reader

Morning Session feat. Jeff Herrington (8:30 am to 12:00 pm)
(Note: Registration for this session includes the continental breakfast and networking lunch.)

About the session: Too many organizations write for the screen the same way they write for the printed page. In this workshop, Jeff Herrington will walk us through the many nuances associated with writing content (web page, intranet page, social media post, email) for those reading it on a desktop, laptop, tablet, phone or watch. The session will also contain recent research about the social media platforms where you are most likely to reach whichever demographic group you are targeting and how touchscreens are changing the way we write for people on the go.

JeffHerrington2About the speaker: Jeff Herrington has enjoyed one of those careers that just makes you want to slap him. His first job after graduating from the Southern Methodist University (SMU) journalism program was that of editor-in-chief for Southwest Business, one of the regional magazines published by the National Association of Purchasing Management. From there he went on to become editor-in-chief of the SMU alumni magazine, winning awards from IABC Dallas, the Dallas Press Club and CASE (the Council for Advancement and Support of Education).

He followed that work with a three-year stint as editor of employee publications for Diamond Shamrock Corporation, one of the country’s largest independent explorers and developers of oil and natural gas. For 12 years, he traveled worldwide as a free-lance writer for corporate clients such as IBM, AT&T, Pillsbury, General Mills and Baxter Healthcare, among many other firms. In that role, he interviewed a prime minister of New Zealand, the CEO of Argentina’s national oil company and France’s leading heart surgeon, among many other luminaries.

For 20 years, Jeff has been a corporate communication consultant, whose expertise has been followed by such companies as Coca-Cola France, Whirlpool, John Deere and Wausau Insurance. His work in the political arena has helped one candidate get elected mayor of Dallas and three major Dallas bond packages pass. For 25 years, his writing and content workshops have been brought on-site multiple times by more than 100 companies in the Fortune 1000, including JPMorgan Chase, American Century Investments, Arizona Public Service, Phillips 66, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.

If that weren’t enough, he has composed several crossword puzzles that have been published either as Friday or Saturday puzzles in The New York Times. He launched his career as a mystery novelist with his first book, Murder Becomes Manhattan, published in November 2014. Murder Becomes Miami, the second book in the series, was published this past November.

For his work in our field, he was chosen as IABC Dallas’s Communicator of the Year in 2000. But he considers his biggest achievement that of learning from the hundreds of really smart communication professionals like you whom he has had the honor of working with throughout the years.
